PALplates

Wouldn't it be great if computers were better integrated into our work environment providing access and information where and when it is needed?

Currently office workers have only two computing choices: they can walk to their office each time they need to access information, or they can carry a computer with them at all times. We'd like to suggest another alternative:

A sample Kiosk

By placing computers at key places -- places that afford computing tasks, we believe that we can provide the advantages of mobile computing without the disadvantages of low bandwidth or high latency connectivity. (Mobile computing without mobile computers!)

This is where PALplates comes in. PALplates are multimedia kiosks located in or near places which afford tasks. Each PALplate has a custom interface which supports the tasks appropriate to it's location. This interface may change depending on what objects and people are near it. In addition, support for authentication allows users to access private information and functionality.
