Printing

User group: Visitor, Staff, Project Group

Location: Printer/Photocopier/FAX Room

Scenario

  1. You walk into the printer room to pick up your paper, only to discover that someone is currently printing out a book on the printer. You use the PALplate to redirect your job to a printer down the hall.

It seems like this functionality should probably be incorporated into the printer ..

Interface

It's not clear that this shouldn't be a task supported by the printer instead of the PALplate, but the basic idea is that you can access a list of printer jobs, and modify that list, based on permissions & authentication status.

The public interface should also provide information about the current document cue on the printer. This way, the user can do things like print slides with complete certainty that their document is "first" in line.

Issues

Privacy

The system needs to notice when the user has walked away and time out. It should probably start making noise or flashing after a very small amount of idle time.

Hardware

???

Software

???

Network

The kiosk needs to be able to speak to the printer and to the user's home file system.
