Voice User Interface Numbers to Call
You can phone the following demonstration numbers to try out VUIs
yourself.
Applied Language Technology's (617/494-9433) "music mall." Say
almost any musical group or artist--there are over 2,400 in the
database--and see what
happens.
AT&T Advanced Speech Products (Middletown NJ--908/582-5893) gives
several demos, but the digit recognition is truly remarkable. You can say
any string
of digits fluently; try, for example, your social security number,
spoken as you would to another person.
Lucent Technologies (614/860-6572) gives a choice of demos. Press 3
to get the Department Store, which asks which department you want.
Choosing 4 will let
you say any state, hear facts about the state and get a map faxed to
you. You will also hear an example of synthetic speech (text-to-speech).
Northern Telecom (514/765-7862) gives current stock quotes for the
New York, American, Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary, and Nasdaq markets. Say
"instructions for use" the first time you call, and remember to say
the full stock name, but without "Inc." or "Corporation."
Voice Control Systems (214/404-9405) demonstrates spelling by
letters. You can test digit recognition at 214/490-1210.
Voice Processing Corporation (800/755-0880 or 617/577-8422) lets the
user try a 16-digit continuous digit credit card number; spelling the name
of an
employee at VPC; voice dialing of names you select; and general
continuous digits.
Wildfire Communications (800/WILDFIRE) lets you hear how Wildfire's
telecommunications assistant works, but you can't actually try the speech
recognition.
