The Barcelona Study
Abroad Summer Program offers a truly unique and enriching educational experience
in an extraordinary overseas setting. The academic program, summarized
below, should be of great benefit to students of all majors.
The Barcelona
program is committed to observing the following guidelines: (1)
insuring, as much as possible, the safety of all participants; (2)
maintaining the highest standards of academic quality; (3) observing
the laws and policies of the US, Georgia, and Georgia Tech as well as
those of the host country and university; (4) emphasizing inclusion and
diversity in all aspects of the program; and (5) maintaining the fiscal
viability of the program. Thus, the program has maintained a high level
of integrity, stability, and overall success since its inception in
1999.
It is possible that
due to various reasons, including financial, political, or other major
concerns, the program may be canceled. The College of Computing,
The Georgia Institute of Technology, or both, reserve the right to
ultimately make this decision. If such a cancellation takes place, all
applicants will be refunded any fees or deposits in full. At this time,
it is expected that the program will proceed as described in this
website.
The program will
take place within the city of Barcelona,
Spain,
and is hosted by the Universidad Politécnica de Catalonia (UPC).
UPC is a public, technological university with strong, internationally
recognized academic and research programs in science and engineering.
UPC's modern campus is a few minutes away from the heart of the city
and its Mediterranean beaches.
The summer 2010
session will take advantage of its vibrant, cosmopolitan location to
enable students to become more reflective about the environments that
people encounter daily but which are often taken for granted.
Specifically, by being immersed in a new culture, and in a new set of
public and private spaces, students will be able to explore fundamental
concepts of design, evaluation, usage, communication, and collaboration
in a variety of contexts. The academic program thus offer opportunities
to investigate these concepts as well as other, complementary themes
through a set of course that are highly interdisciplinary and which, to
various degrees, are intentionally intertwined in scope and content.
Importantly, the
courses will not merely take place in Barcelona, but will exploit the
trans-cultural characteristics of this multifaceted city as a
dynamically changing backdrop and learning resource.
