I know that some of the Cyberguide folk have played with NS Basic, as I
have. NS Basic actually compiles to NewtonScript, so it's even slower than
NewtonScript alone (e.g., the compiler isn't as smart as writing the
NewtonScript straight).

The Squeak mailing list is continuing the discussion of how to port Squeak
to Newton, and it's pretty interesting. Two ports to RISC-processors have
already been done, so there's a cross-port possibility, but others being
discussed include Squeak-in-Forth.

BTW, there is also a Lisp 1.5 for Newton -- the ORIGINAL Lisp ("We don't
need no steenkin' DEFUNs!") where functions are created by assigning a
symbol to a lambda function. Not exactly a viable alternative...
