Virtual Midtown: Class View Team

Fall 1998

  • Summary:
    • Our primary goal for the quarter was to have 1-2 CS 1502 programs that selected students could run on Windows NT (client) and Solaris (server) to test the system. This quarter, three programs were created for CS 1502 students. The client/viewer was successfully ported to Microsoft Windows NT. While a Solaris port is in the works, a Linux port may be a better option for the server because of hardware considerations.

A nagging bug in the Java Native Interface (JNI) and networking code prevented us from giving these programs to any students. The bug also delayed contact with the CS 1502 TA's until late in the quarter. The bug also prevented thorough testing of the JNI.

How other languages (C, C++, Smalltalk, and Lisp) could be added into the system was also considered. C and C++ seem very simple to add. We may have a work around for Lisp. So far, we have come up with very little for SmallTalk. We also considered how other classes could use Virtual Midtown.
