Vehicles in Motion
|
Vehicles in Motion challenges students to design and build a vehicle and its propulsion system that can scale two hills and then continue as far and straight as possible. The design and build process will take place over four stages, or mini-challenges, the last of which is the challenge mentioned above. Using the Learning By Design process, the students will learn a variety of things: scientific concepts such as forces, combining forces, the effects of force on motion, and Newton's Laws; scientific practices involved in designing and running experiments, justifying with evidence, and explaining; design practices, such as informed decision making; and collaboration and communication practices. In Vehicles in Motion, students are graded not on how far their cars go, but rather on their ability to use science content and practices to predict and explain their vehicles' functioning and their design decisions throughout the unit.
