1-way pager services

1-way pagers are well suited to information delivery. There are many services that can be provided to a user of an alphanumeric pager. In the following applications, a user of a pager would have an "information service provider" that would provide the following services as along with a personalized web page that the user would use to select desired services and to configure them.
  • Delivery of e-mail
This is probably the most obvious of services. The user of this service would be allowed to configure the service to deliver e-mail in real-time or in regular intervals. Some of the delivery options could include sending a simple notification of e-mail being sent, sending just the e-mail subject heading, or sending the entire message. The user could also read their e-mail through their web page, in case they had the pager turned off.
  • Delivery of stock quotes
With this service, a user could have stock quotes (last traded price, change, and volume) of any stock(s) of their choice delivered to them. The configuration web page for this service would allow the user to select the stocks and the delivery method (real-time or a regular interval).
  • Delivery of traffic information
This is a service that would provide the user with real-time local traffic information. The user could configure, via a web page, when and how often the service should send the information.
  • Delivery of weather information
This service could provide the user with weather warnings from a given area, current weather information as well as forecasts. Through the web page, the user could configure when and how often weather information should be sent as well as for which area the weather should cover.
  • Delivery of quotes
This application is not necessarily a useful application. However, it is a "service" that many people do regularly use through other means. Some people could have a "famous quote of the day" delivered to them. Other quotes could be Bible quotes, or a "joke of the day," or even a "did you know..."
  • Delivery of headline news
Through a news service, the user could have certain types of news delivered to their pager. The user could configure the service to deliver certain types of news (sports, local events, etc.) and to deliver them either on a real-time basis or at regular intervals.
  • Schedule notification
Through the configuration web page, a user could input their schedule and have the service notify the user of a scheduled event shortly before it is about to occur. The user could also have a wake-up call.
  • Alarm notification
The user could have their car alarm, house security alarm, or house fire alarm connected to the Internet. When one of the alarms goes off, a notification can be sent to the user.
