Corel to Develop Personal Digital Assistant
OTTAWA, Canada - September 9, 1996 -
Corel Corporation has announced its intent to enter the Personal Digital Assistant market with plans to ship product by the middle of 1997. Aside from offering all the standard personal information management capabilities for scheduling, contact management and voice annotation, Corel’s PDA will enable users to browse the World Wide Web, prepare notes using either a keyboard or handwriting recognition, and send and retrieve email. Users will also be able to synchronize their databases with the office or home base while on line or connected to a keyboard docking station.
All applications, including the Web browser, will be written in Sun Microsystem’s Java programming language and will allow users to run Java applets downloaded from the Internet. The open-standard operating system - which will allow third-party developers to write their own programs for the system - will be embedded as a kernel into the PDA with the Java Virtual Machine running on top of that kernel.
"We are cutting new ground with this product in that it will be a complete software solution," said Dr. Michael Cowpland, president and chief executive officer of Corel Corporation. "With an open-standard operating system, access to the Internet, and the ability to fax and email messages or synchronize data through a regular telephone line, our PDA will indeed be unique in the market place."
This pocket device will enable the user to choose between either a monochrome or a color LCD screen and will run on a high-performance RISC processor. It will also come with re-chargeable batteries, a built-in modem for use with either a standard or cellular telephone, a wall-mount adapter, and a keyboard docking station for synchronizing data and re-charging batteries. Users will hold the PDA in a portrait position to access the PIM functions and in a landscape position for Internet browsing and emailing. Approximately three by four inches in size, Corel’s PDA will retail for under $500 US.
