Corel To Integrate Java Into WordPerfect

Corel Corp. plans to make a beta version of WordPerfect written
entirely in Java freely available next month. The program can either
be downloaded from Corel's home page and run locally or simply run
within any Java Web browser, according to Michael Cowpland, president
and CEO of Corel.

The beta product also contains functionality from Quattro Pro and
Presentations, the spreadsheet and presentation graphics packages that
come with Corel WordPerfect 7. Both of these applications are being
ported to Java as well, Cowpland said. Corel plans to release the
complete Java implementations of WordPerfect, Quattro Pro, and
Presentations in January, 1997.

The total memory requirement to run Corel WordPerfect for Java is
about 2 Mbytes, compared to the 8-Mbyte minimum requirement for the
current product. It will be able to read WordPerfect and Microsoft
Word documents, and saves its data files in HTML format.

Corel is also considering entering the Personal Digital Assistant
market, with plans to deliver a Java-based palm-size PDA by March of
next year. The PDA would come with Java and a Web browser embedded in
ROM and an RJ-11 modem jack for 28.8-Kbps modem dial-up for Internet
connectivity. When used offline, the PDA would function like a
standard PDA, with scheduling and an address book. Once connected via
the phone, the user could browse Web pages or send and receive E-mail
and faxes. The PDA would sell for around $300, Cowpland said.
