The World Wide Web (WWW) has grown leaps and bounds in recent years. This growth imposes significant demands on popular web servers. At these popular web sites a few pages ( hot pages ) may be requested by a large group of WWW users in a short period of time. Web servers traditionally unicast these pages to all of the users independently. If this web page could be multicast to the whole group, huge savings of both bandwidth and processor time at the server can be achieved.
