Teaching/Student Services

CLASS NEWSGROUPS Prepare your syllabus, overheads, note, programming assignments, etc. as appropriate. Arrange for a news group for your class with CNS (help@cc). These are git.cc.class.xxxx where xxxx is the class number. Many instructors post assignments to newsgroups rather than handing out hard copies. Students also post questions to the news group which are answered by the instructor, TA and other students.
PRINTING OF CLASSNOTES Coordinate with your administrative support person if you plan to submit notes and overheads to the Tech Printing and Photographic Center. PPC copies and sells the packets to the students. Your administrative support person can help you resolve all copyright problems before submitting to PPC.
OFFICE HOURS Tempo Arrange for office hours during the quarter and give Student Services and your administrative support person your schedule. Try to allow time and flexibility for students with other classes to visit without conflicts.
TEXT BOOK ORDERS
Tempo
Coordinate with Tempo Tinch in Student Services concerning the text book that you will be needing for your class. It is very important that this be done in a timely fashion to insure that books are available to the students at the start of the quarter.
CLASSROOM ASSIGNMENTS Cathy

Inform Cathy Dunnahoo of any classroom requirements that you may have. This includes whiteboards, overhead projectors, BARCO/Sony/ Videography displays, etc., (most classrooms are equipped with overheads and chalk/white boards). Classroom assignments are made by the GT Campus Planning Office, but Cathy will place your requests.

Making changes to the originally scheduled times/rooms that a class meets is not allowed.

LAB FACILITIES Arrange for and ensure availability of computer labs and facilities that your students may need. Be SURE to check that any software for projects is already purchased, available and installed. Cathy will schedule labs and David Leonard should be contacted about instructors needs in order to coordinate with OIT. You should verify that the software needed for labs is available at least a month before the quarter begins. Student accounts for CoC labs need to be requested from CNS (help@cc) during the first week of classes. Students automatically have accounts on the Hydra Systems and OIT clusters, including the DEC station lab in the College.
GRADUATE TEACHING ASSISTANTS Kurt Request a teaching assistant and/or grader as necessary. This request should be placed with Kurt Eiselt, Asst. Dean of Student Services.
ROLL DISTRIBUTION Tempo Obtain your initial class rolls in hardcopy form from Tempo. Electronic class rolls are sent before classes begin by Barbara Durham. Another copy is sent after Phase III registration.
REGISTRATION / DROP DEADLINES Cathy Be aware of the add/drop deadlines, course overloads and the last day for students to withdraw. Last day to add/drop is usually within the first week of classes. The withdraw date is typically the end of the fifth week. Instructors must pride students with sufficient feedback (midterms, etc.) so students will be able to make scheduling decisions by the drop date. The dates are listed on the last page of the OSCAR.
GRADUATING SENIOR GRADES
Cathy
Determine graduating students examination policies. Final grades for graduating seniors are due the Thursday BEFORE normal finals week (usually the last day of classes). The instructor may choose to give early exams to graduating seniors, give extra homework/project or just waive the exam. A final grade sheet for graduating students is distributed to your mail bin the week before finals. This is due by the end of the week to allow the Registrar time to determine what students are/are not graduating, final GPA, etc. Return the grade sheet to Cathy Dunnahoo. If a student is listed as graduating, but may not be for reasons other than failing your class, leave the grade BLANK. The name will reappear on the general class grade sheet later. The student can then take finals as normal.
DEADWEEK POLICY It is Georgia Tech policy NOT to give tests or quizzes during the week before finals or finals week itself. Carefully consider any exceptions to this policy.
GRADE SHEETS Cathy Final grade sheets are delivered early in finals week to your mail box. These grades are due on the Friday of finals week. Return the grade sheet to Cathy Dunnahoo. Incompletes must be removed by the end of the following quarter or the "I" is changed to an "F". Only excuses acceptable to the Registrar's Office will be accepted (death, on-going illness, psychological problems, etc.) See Cathy for Grade Change Forms.
FIRST PROGRAMS If you have programming projects, a quick first assignment might be to have student simply log on, change an existing small program (replace your name with theirs), then compile, link and run the program. This will help locate any system problems and students without accounts.
CHEATING
Kurt
If you have a cheating incident, see Kurt Eiselt, Asst. Dean in Student Services. Do not attempt to handle this independently.
COURSE OPINION SURVEYS
Tempo
Course Opinion Surveys are surveys of teacher/class effectiveness. The "write-in" portion is often very helpful in improving both the effectiveness of the teaching style and course content. They are given at a time specified by the professor sometime during deadweek. Tempo Tinch, in Student Services, will contact you when the times need to be set up. They are administered by a staff member to ensure confidentiality.
CETL The Center for the Enhancement of Teaching & Learning (4-4474) has a number of programs to help improve teaching deliver (e.g.: "The Little Red Schoolhouse").

IMPORTANT:

  • Grade change forms are NEVER to be given to students.

  • A change of grade must be submitted by the end of the following quarter in which the student is enrolled.
  • A change of grade submitted after the following quarter must have either :
    • a memo from the Prof. explaining why the form is being submitted (Prof. didn't submit on time), or,
    • a petition to the faculty completed by the student explaining why the form is late (the student didn't follow through in time).
Commencement
Tempo
Five CoC faculty and the Dean (or his representative) participate in Commencement Exercises each quarter. During a 2 year period (8 quarters) each faculty member is assigned a quarter to participate. Faculty will be notified in the beginning of their assigned quarter so that plans can be made.
