Tall Clock
Walnut, walnu veneer, glass, gilt, bronze

Gustave Herter (working 1854-1865)
New York City, ca. 1857-1865

Virginia Caroll Crawford Collection, 1984.143

Gustave Herter was listed as a sculptor on the
papers he signed in 1850 in New York renouncing
his citizenship of Wurttemberg in Germany.  Soon
he was in business as a furniture maker, and his
interest in carving is evident on this clock.  Its
coffin-like shape suggests the passage of time.
