The Thanksgiving of Noah,
ca. 1685-90
Oil on canvas
Gift of Samuel H. Kress Collection, 58.30
After surviving the flood, Noah built an altar
for burnt sacrifices in thanksgiving. Here, Noah
has made his offering and looks to the heavens
as a rainbow marks God's new covenant with
man to never again destroy the earth by water.
