In Grey Moses, Andres Serrano photographed
a small plastic copy of Michelangelo’s Moses
submerged in milk and water. The statuette,
which is only a few inches tall, takes on monu-
mental dimensions. Milk signifies purity
and
maternity, and it recalls Moses’ promise to lead
the Israelites out of Egypt into the land of
milk
and honey.
