Sofa and Side Chairs
Laminated rosewood, white pine, ash,
gilt brass casters, original applique designs
on modern silk velvet upholstery
Attributed to John Henry Belter (1804-1863),
New York City, ca. 1855
Virginia Carroll Crawford Collection, 1981.1000.61-.63
The rosewood frames of this parlor set
are
carved to represent intertwined vines and
flowers. The plant motif is carried through
to the original medallions mounted on a re-
production of the original upholstery. The
curving form of the sofa (made possible by
Belter's invention of laminating rosewood)
and the plant motifs create the feeling of a
garden bower.
