Arshile Gorky
American, born in Armenia, 1905-1948

Garden in Sochi, 1940-41
Gouache on board

Purchase with bequest of C. Donald Belcher, 1977.50

In this painting, Arshile Gorky evoked his child-
hood memory of his father's garden in Armenia,
which was regarded by villagers as a sacred sport.
Gorky used brilliant colors and fantastic forms to
convey the magic of the place. In the upper right
are the fluttering strips of cloth people attached to
the garden's big poplar tree (an Armenian custom).
