Bill Traylor was a visual storyteller who chroni-
cled life’s drama with poignancy and humor. Here
he captures an animated exchange between a man
and woman, using simple silhouetted shapes. Born
into slavery and working most of his life as a farm
laborer, the self-taught artist created all of his
known drawings when he was in his eighties.
