Diane Arbus always photographed head-on,
confronting her subjects. She was less inter-
rested in composition or visual inventiveness
than in revealing the psychological truths of
those she photographed. This photograph of
twins-identical but profoundly different-
seems to suggest that behind their sameness
(and the conformity of middle-class society)
lie discomfort and turmoil.
