James VanDerZee chronicled the Harlem
Renaissance, a period roughly from 1919 to
1929, during which Harlem was the undisputed
capital of African American culture and the focus
of intense artistic, literary, and musical activity. In
this photograph, VanDerZee combined a wedding
portrait with a vision of the daughter he predicted
for the couple's future.
