Lucas Samaras
American, born Greece, 1936 Photo-Transformation,
November 12, 1973, 1973
Internal dye diffusion print
Gift of Lucinda W. Bunnen for the Bunnen Collection,
1983.24
For his 1973-74 series Photo Transformations,
Lucas Samaras used the then-new Polaroid
SX-70 camera to create an instant, one-of-a-kind
print. He achieved his hallucinatory effects by
manipulating the surface of the photograph as it
developed, blending by hand the photo-emulsion
pigments. Here he becomes a snarling creature
admiring himself in a small mirror.
