Purchase in honor of John Wieland, Chairman of the
Board of the High Museum of Art, 1994-1997, with
funds from Alfred Austell Thornton in memory of
Leila Austell Thornton and Albert Edward Thornton, Sr.,
and Sarah Miller Venable and William Hoyt Venable.

In 1994, Gerhard Richter took several photographs
of his wife reading a magazine in the kitchen of their
Cologne apartment. He used one of these photographs
as the basis for this painting.
