Sideboard and Two Knifeboxes
Mahogany, poplar inlay of various woods

William Whitehead
New York City, ca. 1790-1810

Purchase with funds from a supporter of the museum,
76.1000.5.ae

The sideboard was a new furniture form in affluent
households of the young American republic. With
highly figured wood veneers, delicate tapering legs,
and a tight composition of straight and curved lines,
this piece is characteristic of the finest urban
American furniture of the period. It is the only
known American sideboard from the period to
have the original flatware boxes.
