This small painting on panel would originally have
been part of a larger altarpiece devoted to Nicholas of
Bari, patron saint of pawnbrokers, children, and sailors.
This painting depicts the miraculous event that occurred
when the newborn saint stood up and praised God, a
foreshadowing of his saintly destiny.
