Running a Linux desktop on a Sunray

Contributed by Randy Carpenter

This note is primarily for the 1st year guys. You may or may not know that you can get a Linux desktop (in addition to a Solaris desktop) on the SunRay at your desk. Here are the instructions:

  1. On the SunRay, if the screen displays a small window in the center named "Server Selection", choose one of the servers in the list (gaia, gaia2, gaia3) and click OK. This is where your X server will run.
  2. A Solaris login window will appear.
  3. Click the "Options" button.
  4. Select the "Remote Login" menu.
  5. Select "Enter Host Name..."
  6. Enter one of the Linux desktop servers (tampere or mikkeli).
  7. A Linux desktop will appear.

You can also run Windows applications from a Sunray using our Citrix Metaframe servers...however that server infrastructure is currently being overhauled to support Windows XP. We expect to have the service available to SunRays early this semester.
