Irfan A. Essa
is an Assistant Professor & Imlay Fellow in the College of Computing, and Adjunct
Assistant Professor in the School of
Electrical and Computer Engineering, Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta,
Georgia.
In addition to the GVU Center, Dr. Essa is affiliated
with the Intelligent Systems Group
and the Future Computing
Environments effort in the College of Computing. He has founded the
Computational Perception
Laboratory and also interacts with the Center for Signal
and Image Processing, in the School of
Electrical and Computer Engineering.
Dr. Essa received his B.S. from the
Illinois Institute of Technology,
Chicago in 1988. After his Bachelor's work, he joined the
MIT Media Laboratory
as a Research Assistant. Irfan earned his M.S. from
Massachusetts Institute of Technology
in 1990, writing a Thesis on
physically-based modeling for virtual worlds and vision systems. He
worked on his Ph. D. also at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology
finishing in September 1994. His Ph.D. dissertation dealt with visual
analysis and interpretation of facial expressions. Irfan has also
worked at Thinking Machines and has held several other positions.
Prior to joining the faculty at the Georgia Institute of Technology,
Irfan worked as a Research Scientist at the MIT Media Laboratory.
Dr. Essa was born in Karachi, Pakistan and has lived in US for over 12
years (in Chicago & Boston). He is married. Loves the outdoors and
enjoys gadgets, teaching, skiing, biking, hiking, golf, squash,
basketball, etc.
