Irfan A. Essa
is an Assistant Professor & Imlay Fellow in the College
of Computing, and Adjunct Assistant Professor in the School
of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Georgia
Institute of Technology, Atlanta, Georgia.
He got his B.S. from the Illinois Institute
of Technology, Chicago in 1988. After his Bachelor's work, Irfan joined
the MIT Media Laboratory as a Research
Assistant. Irfan earned his M.S. from Massachusetts
Institute of Technology in 1990, writing a Thesis on physically-based
modeling for virtual worlds and vision systems. He worked on his Ph. D.
also at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology finishing in September
1994. His Ph.D. dissertation dealt with visual analysis and interpretation
of facial expressions. Irfan has also worked at Thinking Machines
and has held several other positions. Prior to joining the faculty at the
Georgia Institute of Technology, Irfan worked as a Research Scholar at
the MIT Media Laboratory.
His main research interests are in the areas of computer vision,
computer graphics, digital multimedia, HCI, neuroscience, cognition and
computational modeling. Irfan is working on developing Interactive
Environments with Computational Perception - vision, speech, touch.
In addition, he also works on Image-based Modeling, Rendering and Animation.
In addition to his affiliation to the GVU Center, Irfan is also
affiliated with the Intelligent
Systems Group and the Future
Computing Environments effort in the College of Computing. He
has founded the Computational
Perception Laboratory and also interacts with the Center
for Signal and Image Processing, in the School
of Electrical and Computer Engineering.
