The royal family and the Olympic team are pictured here in the first Olympiad after the Second World War at St. Moritz. The previous two Olympiads were cancelled because of the war. At Garmisch in 1936, the team had performed quite respectably. 1948 was another story. Team members were afflicted by flu, stomach infections, and bureaucratic mixups.

Liechtenstein sent only two athletes to the Summer Games in London. The heat was so intense at the opening ceremonies that the carrier of the Liechtenstein flag, an English sailor, fainted dead away. The decathlon took place under constant rain and took so long that some of the events had to be completed in darkness, with flashlights providing the only illumination. Both Liechtensteiner athletes were injured and could not complete the competition.
