Oskar Ospelt and Xaver Frick took part in the first Olympic Trials held in Liechtenstein, in 1936. In the 100 meter competition, Oskar Ospelt won with a time of 11 seconds. Ospelt also won the discus and javelin competition. But Frick was the clear winner in the 200, 400, and 800 meter foot race. Both these men competed in Berlin that year, along with other athletes in the bicycling and shooting competitions.

It was earlier in 1936, however, that Liechtenstein appeared for the first time in an Olympiad. The Winter Games took place that year in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Berlin. Liechtenstein sent Hubert Negele and Franz Schaedler in the alpine ski competition, and Baron von Falz-Fein and Eugen Buechel in the bobsled competition. The Baron's family had played a very important role in the founding of Liechtenstein's National Olympic Committee in 1935.
