Summary

This webpage presents a brief overview of the M5 project: Making Multiple Monitors More Manageable. With the increased research attention in the area of multiple-monitor systems and the rising ubiquity of them, there are many different issues that need to be addressed. Initial work in the area indicates that one such issue will be window management, as users now may have twice or thrice as much display area to manage as they had previously.

We contend that despite many interesting and important pieces of research related to window management, as a research community we still know very little of both the way people actually use window operations and of the higher-level intentions behind such use. Such an understanding can greatly benefit those attempting to solve window management issues specifically for multiple monitor systems since their solutions can incorporate a broader understanding of user goals. We have conducted two studies of window management to develop a better understanding of window management; links are listed above.

We are grateful that the National Science Foundation has provided support for the M5 project under Grant #0414667.
