Well, here is an interesting motivating factor for some of this
quarter's Hack Fest activities. We already have a handy-dandy
number of neat Java applets that could be improved upon and
submitted by individual students with the right motivation.

ACM/IBM "Quest for Java 97" Contest

I am proud to announce that ACM is working together with IBM to offer the
"Quest for Java +97" Contest, open only to ACM Student Members. Submit your
very best Java application/applet and compete for a variety of exciting
prizes. The Contest ends June 30, 1997. You'll need to consult the website
for submission details and updates www.acm.org/jquest. Here's what you can
win:

10 First Place Winners: IBM ThinkPad, 560 (value $5,000 U.S.)
20 Second Place Winner: $1,000 gift certificates for software/hardware
30 Third Place Winners: Wool Bomber Jacket (value $250 U.S.)
5 Honorable Mentions: Complete set of Addison-Wesley's Java Book Series

All registrants will receive a Contest T-shirt,
and the first 1,000 Contest registrants receive a free one-year subscription

to Java Report, valued at $60.

What kind of Java application? For example:

Calendar and group scheduling application
