For anyone interested (especially FCE people out in California), I
will be making a tour of the Bay area the week of August 12. I
have been invited to speak again to the Apple Newton group and
the Advanced Technologies Group about the FCE work. Our work
is gaining some momentum and exposure in the right places now.
I will also be visiting Motorola's Cellular Infrastructure Group
next week (July 11th) to talk about some FCE prototyping work that
they are interested in supporting. For those that don't know,
Anind Dey and Lara Catledge are both doing internships at
Motorola CIG this summer. They are doing some neat stuff that they
will tell us about when we all get back together in the fall.
Take care, (and happy 4th of July)
Gregory

Dear Newton Developer:
As you may have heard, Steve Capps has decided to leave Apple and join
Microsoft, where he will focus on Windows Internet interface design.
During his 15 years with Apple, Steve made numerous and invaluable
contributions to
both the Macintosh and Newton platforms. We will all miss Steve and I know
that you will join me in wishing him well in his future endeavors.
Despite Steve's departure, we will continue to set the pace in PDA
development. I am very proud of the talent, creativity and commitment of the
first-class team we have in place at the Newton Systems Group. We will build on
Steve's work and ensure continued innovation and success for the Newton
platform.
With the strong support of Apple's Chairman and CEO, Gil Amelio, we will
further expand the Newton team and will continue to attract the industry's best
and brightest. Most importantly, we will continue to provide you with superior
support, assistance and expertise.
It's a tremendously exciting time to be a member of the Newton family. As
part of Apple's newly created Information Appliance Division, we are
enjoying increased internal and external visibility, with Dr. Amelio
positioning Newton technologies as central to Apple's corporate and
Internet strategies. We
also just announced the Newton Internet Enabler to a standing-room-only crowd
at PC Expo, where the MessagePad 130 won the the PC World 1996 World Class
Award for Personal Digital Assistants.
Thanks to you and the many dedicated members of my team, Newton will
continue to strengthen its position as the leading hand-held computing platform.
Very truly yours,
Sandy Benett
Vice President
