We already have a prototype of such a system, named CyBARguide. It
cotains a simple, zoomable street map of atlanta at multiple detail
levels and allows users to locate bars in Atlanta (and who said grad
students don't have any fun, eh?).

With current Newton technology, a rotatable vector map is not really
possible, though with the StrongARM chips making their debut in the
next few months, the Newton will have more processing power than that
Pentium thing and we will be able to realize more complicated maps
like what you are suggesting.

I can try to give you a demo of CyBARguide if you would like, though
it is only an initial prototype (it works, but only limited
information/maps are entered into the system).
