Flushing input

Is there an easy way to flush the input given a file descriptor (file
descriptor obtained via the open command)?

Apparently, every time I write to one of the IR devices to send a signal
(which it does), it also thinks it has some input (which seems to be the
same thing that it sent). The transmitter and receiver are blocked by a
small tab, so I don't think that it's sending a signal to itself.
