Flexible, Efficient Backplane-based Network Emulation

Network in a box

This project is concerned with realizing a next-generation network emulation environment that will enable rapid emulation/simulation of large-scale networks for use in on-line simulation-based network management methods, and to facilitate distributed application development, analysis and testing.

We are developing three key technologies to achieve this goal:

  1. A novel parallel software backplane that enables model reuse from different network simulation/emulation tools, including integration across split protocol stack
  2. New techniques exploiting direct execution for accurate and transparent capture and control of live application network activity
  3. New parallel discrete event simulation techniques to enable modeling large-scale networks.
