NEW E-CHIEF FOR EUROPE
The incoming president of the European Commission has appointed a new head
of the EU's Information Society programme. Viviane Reding, from Luxembourg,
will take the portfolio, which covers the EU's e-government programme.
Reding takes over from Finnish commissioner Erkki Liikanen, who has
returned to his country to head its central bank.

CALL FOR EU TO PRESS FOR RELEASE OF MALDIVES CYBER-DISSIDENTS
(Reporters Without Borders) Reporters Without Borders called today on the
EU to obtain the release of four Maldivian cyber-dissidents, including
three persons working for the e-mail newsletter Sandhaanu, who have been
jailed since police broke up a 13 August pro-democracy demonstration.
